BIAB has a reputation for lasting ages, and when it's applied and looked after well, it really does. But "how long" depends on your nails, your routine and a bit of aftercare. Here's what to realistically expect.
The honest answer
For most people, a BIAB overlay looks great for around three weeks, and plenty of clients comfortably reach three and a half to four before a refill. That's typically a week or so longer than gel polish, which is a big part of why BIAB is so popular.
What shortens it is rarely the product itself — it's usually one of a few everyday things.
Why BIAB lifts or chips early
The usual culprits: using your nails as tools (opening cans, peeling labels, scratching off stickers), lots of hot water and washing up without gloves, and picking at the edges the moment one corner catches. Very oily nail plates and fast natural nail growth can play a part too, which is where good prep at your appointment matters.
How to make BIAB last longer
A few simple habits make a real difference:
Wear gloves for cleaning and washing up. Hot water and harsh products are the quickest way to loosen any gel.
Oil your cuticles daily. It sounds counterintuitive, but nail oil keeps the nail flexible so the BIAB moves with it instead of lifting. This is the single best habit.
Don't pick. If a nail lifts or chips, book in for a tidy rather than peeling it — peeling takes a layer of your natural nail with it.
Treat them as jewels, not tools. Grab a key or a coin, not your nail, for prying things open.
When to book your refill
Most people come back every three to four weeks for a refill, which keeps the overlay strong and your natural nails protected as they grow. Leaving it much longer means more regrowth at the base and a higher chance of catching and lifting.
